Exploring corporate e-learning research: what are the opportunities?

Consuelo Waight, Barbara Stewart

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to highlight research areas that can help inform and advance corporate e-learning, based on the results of a systematic review of extant literature in this area. The article begins by outlining the reasons behind the importance of focusing on corporate e-learning research. It then describes the design and methodology of the systematic review, before presenting the findings in terms of what is already known about corporate e-learning from the work that researchers have carried out to date. Four key thematic areas emerging from the analysis are identified and discussed: maximising the impact of corporate e-learning, the nature of corporate e-learning, the role of technology and instructional design in corporate e-learning and andragogy and corporate e-learning. The article concludes with a discussion of future directions and opportunities for corporate e-learning research, organised under the categories of the different stages of an e-learning intervention, facilitating strategic e-learning, developing higher-order thinking skills through e-learning and theory building in corporate e-learning.
