E-learning maturity in the workplace – the benefits and practices

Laura Overton, Howard Hills

Abstract

Over the past five years, the authors have conducted research with over 700 UK-based organisations (including many multi-national organisations) in an effort to identify implementation practices that positively influence the business impact, staff impact (including motivation) and uptake of learning technologies. This work has led to the development of a model of e-learning maturity designed to help businesses identify their implementation strengths and weaknesses. This article highlights the results of the latest research with over 300 UK-based employers, which took place at the start of the current credit crunch. It considers how employer attitudes to e-learning have changed over the last two to four years and describes the differences in results and practices between mature and sporadic users of learning technology. It then uses these results to review the authors current e-learning maturity model.
